alllowing space when passing a bicycle

Last month, Oklahoma instituted a law that requires cars to allow at least 3 feet of space when they pass a car. I wish California would institute this law, as all too often cars pass too close to me when I am riding my road bike.

Hello Peter,

Hope it would help...

Peter, I, too, would like to see a law like this, but I doubt it would do much good. Just think about how many people ignore the "You must pull over if 5 or more vehicles are waiting behind you" law. This law would get ignored as well.

Ross - at least if there is a law, hopefully there can be education that goes with the law to help teach more people. I think that a lot of drivers don't even know that they are driving too close to cyclists.

I think your Japanese is much better than mine... As for the law, I would like the Australian government enact such one in Australia. That is why I have been so reluctant to ride my byke here. Too dangerous.

Unfortunately, there was a death this month due to a car trying to pass a cyclist and sideswiping them in an area that I have ridden many times. The story is at the Palo Alto Onlne web site.

Ross may be right that people will ignore the law, so education may be needed. But with a passing law like Oklahoma's, the driver would get cited in this case. Otherwise, it is not clear whether the diver will get a ticket at all, even though the cyclist ended up dead due to their unsafe passing.
