Good camera? Good price?

What do you think? Is this a good camera and a good price? Looking for a "basic" DSLR. This one comes with 1 lens.

And is this "starter kit" (case, DVD, etc.) any good?

Check out Costco. I just saw a Canon Digital Rebel with 2 kit lenses for $760. That seems a pretty good deal. They also had the Nikon you linked to, but I don't remember the price. I do think it might have been cheaper though.

Actually, Costco after tax for the same camera is about $40 more expensive (at the online site - assuming stores have the same prices). Plus we have some Amazon gift certificates to use.

Peter (it's Ross here). I couldn't see what camera you're considering (if there was a link, then I missed it), but I've been very happy with my Nikon D5000. I think you can get this (with a kit lens) for about $800 (or perhaps a bit less) at Best Buy.

Ross - yes, I am considering the D5000. That Amazon ad is the link.

It may be a good one but I have no idea. Why? Because the model seems a bit different from what I have seen here in Tokyo.
I think that the model number D5000 might be export use. Since we have different model number (D5o) for Japanese domestic/not-export model. I have learned the fact when I got my old film camera long time ago.
Well, where does the lends made? If it comes up with Japan-made lends, I would say it is a good deal.

The Nikon is definitely a good camera, and I don't know if you ended up purchasing it, but here's a suggestion. The Canon Rebel XS is comparable, and cheaper on Amazon. The megapixels aren't a big consideration once you get about 10MP, and since it's cheaper you could get an extra lens with it. Hope that helps.

John - Thanks for the comment. Consumer Reports had the Rebel T1i and XSi as recommended, but didn't recommend the XS. Looks like they dinged it for versatility and its viewfinder.

I did get the Nikon. It also was dinged for its viewfinder.
