What country's beer?

Yesterday, I bought some Asahi Super Dry Beer at the local super market. This is a beer that I would often drink when I was in Japan. And these cans look similar to what I drank there, including even having the words "Super Dry" and ”Asahi Beer" written in Japanese. And even the kanji character nama (生) which means draft beer.

But on reading the can, I found an interesting surprise. On the side, it is labeled "Product of Canada". Huh?

The Mexican Fisherman (メキシコの漁師)

This is an interesting and inspirational story, one that will perhaps make one think about what is important in life.

The Mexican Fisherman /

A boat docked in a tiny Mexican village. An American tourist complimented the Mexican fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took him to catch them.

"Not very long," answered the Mexican.

"But then, why didn't you stay out longer and catch more?" asked the American.

The Mexican explained that his small catch was sufficient to meet his needs and those of his family.

The American asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?"

"I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, and take a siesta with my wife. In the evenings, I go into the village to see my friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs...I have a full life."

The American interrupted, "I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you!

"You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat. With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers. You can then leave this little village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles, or even New York City! From there you can direct your huge enterprise."

"How long would that take?" asked the Mexican.

"Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years," replied the American.

"And after that?"

"Afterwards? That's when it gets really interesting," answered the American, laughing. "When your business gets really big, you can start selling stocks and make millions!"

"Millions? Really? And after that?"

"After that you'll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta, and spend your evenings drinking with your friends!"

Blogs I Read - Learn Japanese Podcast

Another Blog that I read, or in this case listen to, is the Learn Japanese Podcast at http://japanese.libsyn.com. A Brit named Alex who now lives in Osaka puts up these podcasts about every week. He covers various aspects of the Japanese language, including providing information on various bens (Japanese dialects). I download these and listen to these when I am driving in my car.
他の読んでいるブログはhttp://japanese.libsyn.comでLearn Japanese Podcast(日本語を習うポッドキャスト)だ。

He also publishes videos from time to time. And he has other Blog sites which are off of the learning Japanese subject, and cover other things (such as one day that he and a friend biked a route that followed the Osaka Loop train line).

Why would we want a 3rd Bush as President

An article in the San Francisco Chronicle reported that President Bush said that he would like to see his brother Jeb as President. But why would we want to have a 3rd Bush as President?

The Seattle times had an article related to approval ratings. There have been 43 Presidents so far. President H W Bush (the father) had the 5th lowest approval rating of all the Presidents. The current President (W) is now tied for the 3rd lowest with President Nixon, but it looks like W continues to drop and likely beat Nixon for the (dis)honor.

So we have had 2 Bushes as President, and both have been rated very poorly. What makes us believe that a third Bush would do any better?

Parrots /

I went for a walk around San Francisco last weekend. During the walk, I saw some parrots on Telegraph Hill. I think these parrots were pets that got loose many years ago, and have lived and bred and grown into a large colony in San Francisco. I have seen as many as 20 parrots at one time, though there were only 4 or 5 in this area on that day.

There is a movie and book about these parrots. They are titled "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill". I have not seen the movie or read the book yet. Information on the book, movie, and the parrots can be seen at the following web site:

Gasoline Price Comparison

In America, fuel is around $3.00 per gallon (about $0.80 per liter, or 92 yen per liter). NBC News tonight compared how much we pay in America to other countries. It was pretty interesting. They are paying $6.56 per gallon in England (about $1.75, or 201 yen, per liter). And $6.92 per gallon in Hong Kong. I guess we can't complain.

But there is still a place where gasoline costs less than water. In Kuwait, gasoline is $0.82 per gallon (about 25 yen per liter). That is cheap!

For those in other countries, how much do you pay for gasoline?

Is the wet winter over?

It has been a wet winter here in California. In March, it rained 25 of 31 days -- breaking a 102-year-old record. And I heard on the news that we received more quantity of rain in April than we had in any April over 100 years.

But now it seems that our rainy season has stopped and the weather has cleared up. Yeah!
